Coyote spotted in east Newport
Residents near Broadway and Raymond and 19th streets reportedly
saw a coyote roaming around in their neighborhood on Wednesday
afternoon.
The animal was reported walking on the street at about 12:05 p.m.,
Costa Mesa Police Lt. Dale Birney said.
Animal Control officers responded to the call, but could not find
the coyote, he said.
Coyotes are common in the east side of the city because of the
Back Bay reserve, officials said, but the coyote is also very much an
urban animal, and many can be seen comfortably lying down on front
yards or walking down a residential street.
To protect small pets from coyote attacks, officials say,
residents must keep their pets indoors at all times and never leave
food or trash lying around in their yards.
