UC Irvine at Beach Tournament: Visiting UC Irvine, ranked No. 6 by Baseball America, lost a doubleheader to host Coastal Carolina on Saturday at BB&T; Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The No. 12-ranked Chanticleers (6-1) rallied from a 6-3 deficit to claim a 13-6 victory in Game 2, after posting a 7-4 Game 1 triumph in a battle of notable starting pitchers.
UCI senior All-American left-hander Danny Bibona was bested by Coastal Carolina’s Cody Wheeler, a preseason All-American, to end Bibona’s streak of winning eight consecutive starts. Bibona, who fell to 1-1, also absorbed his first loss in his last 13 decisions.
The three-game skid is the longest for UCI (3-3) since it lost the final three games of the 2006 season.
UCI is scheduled to complete the four-game tournament today at 8 a.m. against James Madison.
Men’s Basketball
Westmont 88, Vanguard 69: The tough season continued for the Lions, who dropped their Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday at home.
Dennis Heenan led Vanguard (5-20, 4-15 in conference) with 20 points and Greg Scott added 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Women’s Basketball
UC Irvine 82, Cal State Northridge 65: Mikah Maly-Karros scored a game-high 20 points in leading the visiting Anteaters to a Big West Conference victory.
Rebecca Maessen added 14 points and six rebounds for UCI (9-18, 6-8 in conference).
Vanguard 94, Westmont 80: The host Lions (20-2, 16-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference) used a strong first half to post an easy victory against Westmont (16-10, 9-9).
Bridgette Reyes led Vanguard — which led, 48-38, at the half — with 27 points.
Women’s Water Polo
Hawaii 11, UC Irvine 7: The Anteaters (6-5) dropped their Bracket C opener of the UC Irvine Invitational at the Anteater Aquatics Complex on Saturday.
Caitlin Haskell and Cortney Collyer led UCI with two goals apiece.
