The Senate on Wednesday voted down a House spending proposal that contained a wide array of cuts to environmental initiatives in California and across the nation.
The measure, approved by the Republican-led House last month, sliced more than $60 billion from the federal budget, including a $3-billion reduction in funds for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The Senate also gave a thumbs-down to an alternate budget plan of more modest cuts offered by the chamber’s Democrats.
The votes leave lawmakers with less than two weeks to forge a compromise plan or face a government shutdown.
