Today is Free Comic Book Day, and it’s a great time to stop by a local shop and support the medium that we all love so much --- pick up some free ones, buy some others and then put an issue or two in the hands of a youngster who may only know Batman and Spider-Man from the movies and video games.
If you need some guidance where to go, you can search by ZIP code at the Free Comic Book Day website.
Update: I just got back from Amazing Heroes in Long Beach where my son, Ben, and I walked out with an armload of comics. In the free stack, there was Superman, Spider-Man, ‘Star Wars,’ X-Men and ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ In the paid-for stack, I picked up the Harvey Kurtzman hardcover ‘The Grasshopper and the Ant,’ two trade paperback collections -- Joss Whedon’s ‘Runaways: Dead End Kids’ and ‘The Brave and the Bold: Demons and Dragons’ by Mark Waid and Scott Kolins. Ben also got a nifty looking Iron Man toy and a trade paperback of ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ by Matt Wayne and J. Torres, the young-reader adventures based on the animated series, which he and I watch together.
The store was packed and, in fact, the owner dug into old inventory to handle the demand when his new stock of ‘FCBD’ 2010 releases ran dry. Lovely.
