St. Genevieve boys’ basketball coach Kimo Atkins was fired on Monday, and I was kind of wondering why since the guy had led the Valiants to a 13-6, 2-2 record. I left a message with school principal Daniel Horn who apparently forwarded my message to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
According to archdiocese spokeswoman Carolina Guevara, Atkins was fired ‘due to failure to comply with school policies.’ No one would tell me exactly what happened, though.
In his two-year career at St. Genevieve, Atkins compiled a 18-16 record and earned a playoff berth. Junior Varsity Coach Manuel Abaunza has taken over as the interim varsity coach.
Hopefully, this development doesn’t throw the team off its game. The Valiants dropped a contest against Murphy on Wednesday, but if George Vogitzias & Co. beat St. Anthony tonight, they’ll clinch a Division IV-A playoff berth.
