Laguna Hills has won 21 straight league wrestling titles, whether it was from the regular season, a tournament or a combination of both, according to Cliff Jarmie, head coach for the last 24 seasons. The Hawks had no trouble extending that streak this season with the Pacific Coast League dual-meet title, handily defeating their toughest competition in the league, Irvine, 50-13.
A rematch between the two teams could be on tap next weekend in the semifinal round of the Division II dual-meet championships at Royal. The official seedings come out next week, but right now defending champion Laguna Hills (ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section, unranked in the state) is seeded No. 1 and Irvine (unranked in the Southern Section, No. 22 in the state) is seeded fourth, with North Torrance and Royal in between.
Before that, however, Laguna Hills looks to claim its second league title of the season -- the team championship at Saturday’s individual league finals at Irvine. And once again Irvine is probably the biggest obstacle in the way. Key showdowns could be top-seeded Scott Chene of Irvine vs. second-seeded Eric Roberts of Laguna Hills at 130, top-seeded Bear Barnes of Laguna Hills vs. second-seeded Kyle Chene of Irvine at 103 and top-seeded John Hayes of Laguna Hills vs. second-seeded Ethan Weisrock at 215.
