There is gallantry in not quitting in the face of overwhelming odds. There’s also the feeling of banging your head against a rock.
It was probably the latter going through the collective minds of Monroe during its 65-41 loss at Washington on Tuesday, in the second round of the City Section Championship Division playoffs.
The Vikings (17-6), seeded 10th, were too short, too light and not skilled enough to keep up with the second-seeded Generals (26-5). Not by a long shot, which was pretty much the primary shot Monroe had to take most of the night.
But Washington Coach Ricky Blackmon will have plenty to discuss with his team before Thursday’s semifinal, which should be the third meeting this season with Marine League foe and third-seeded Narbonne.
The Generals were often loose with their focus and sloppy in their attack. As implausible as it sounds, they made the game harder than it should have been.
That was fine on Tuesday. That won’t work on Thursday.
