Woodland Hills Taft has ended the first quarter with a 19-14 lead over Los Angeles Loyola in a Southern California Regional Division I opener.
Taft guards Landon Drew and Spencer Dinwiddie, who combined to score two points in the City Section Division I final against Westchester, asserted themselves at the outset. Drew made a three-pointer to start the game and Dinwiddie followed with a three-point play.
Dinwiddie looked like he had new confidence, taking the ball to the basket for a layup later in the quarter, putting Taft on top, 15-6. Then he picked up his second foul and had to go to the bench.
Former Loyola guard Jordan Gathers had four points for Taft. Loyola didn’t look too bad considering the Cubs haven’t played since Feb. 26.
