BAKERSFIELD _ Westchester is eight minutes away from repeating as state Division I champions. The Comets lead Newark, 41-33, after three quarters.

Westchester led by as many as 16 points at the outset of the third quarter, then lost interest, similar to what happened last week when Santa Ana Mater Dei fell behind by 20 points in the regional final, then got as close as one point before the Comets prevailed. Newark closed to 34-28 until Denzel Douglas connected on a three-pointer to stop the run.

Khion Sankey scored nine points in the quarter for Newark.

And the officiating isn’t exactly top rate. I just saw a phantom offensive foul.
