The body of a young woman was found in a large suitcase left unclaimed at the new Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday.
Los Angeles Police Lt. Dan Lang said the remains appeared to be those of a Latin or Asian woman, 25 to 35 years of age, and bore no sign of injury.
He said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death, but it appeared that she had suffocated after hiding herself in the 30-by-50-inch soft-sided suitcase in an attempt to enter the country illegally.
Supervising U.S. Customs Inspector Christopher King said the bag might have been brought to the United States by any one of three airlines.
King said the body was discovered during a routine check of baggage left unclaimed and without routing tags in the customs processing area. He said the bag apparently had been sitting at the airport for about two hours after unloading.
