Community College Roundup : Golden West’s Slowdown Doesn’t Stop Mounties

Golden West College used a delay offense Wednesday night in an effort to upset Mt. San Antonio, but the tactic failed as the Mounties gained a 20-10 victory over the Rustlers in South Coast Conference play at Walnut.
The victory kept Mt. San Antonio (9-1 in conference, 22-2 overall) in a first-place tie with Cerritos. The loss was the 11th straight for last-place Golden West (0-10, 7-16).
Golden West did not attempt a shot from the field until 12 minutes had expired and were tied, 4-4, with Mt. San Antonio at halftime. The game was still tied, 6-6, eight minutes into the second half when a three-point play by Mt. SAC center Larry Richard gave the Mounties the lead for good at 9-6.

Fullerton 62, Orange Coast 58 (OT)--Fullerton outscored Orange Coast, 10-6, in overtime to hand the host Pirates’ their fifth straight loss. The third-place Hornets (7-3, 13-10) were led by forward Jon Haymond, who had 16 points.

ORANGE COAST (58)--Goudge 4, Morton 4, Farmer 14, Johnston 22, Mullet 2, Ryan 12.

Cerritos 87, Saddleback 77--Forward Kelly Andrews came off the bench to score 20 points, including a key three-point play, to lead the Falcons (9-1, 18-4) over the Gauchos (4-6, 14-10) at Norwalk. Cerritos led, 40-25, at halftime, but Saddleback rallied to tie twice late in the game. Andrews keyed the victory for Cerritos with 1:44 left when he made a basket and a free throw that gave the Falcons a 79-71 lead.

Compton 81, Santa Ana 75--In a game marred by 52 fouls, the Tartars (4-6, 9-12) held off a rally by the Dons (2-7, 10-12) to win at Compton. Compton led, 56-36, early in the second half, but Santa Ana was able to cut the Tartars’ advantage to four points before losing. The Dons’ leading scorer, Jeff Hughes, was sidelined early by a heel injury and had only three points.

In women’s community college basketball action:
Fullerton 69, OCC 55--Sophomore center Diane Rockwood scored 28 points to give the Hornets sole possession of first place in the South Coast Conference. Fullerton (10-1,20-4) had a 42-18 lead at halftime, but Orange Coast (8-2, 17-5), cut the deficit to eight in the last half. Mary Beth Thobe had 22 of her 26 points in the second half.
Saddleback 72 Cerritos 68--Guard Heather Estey and forward Lisa Jones each had 22 points to lead the Gauchos. Saddleback (9-2 in SCC) is tied for second with Orange Coast.
