Will the Real Lamming . . .

Kenneth Atchity’s review of “The Notebook of Gismondo Cavalletti” (Book Review, Jan. 27) indicates that author R. M. Lamming is a man. The preface to Harper’s excerpt from “The Notebook” (February issue) tells us that Lamming’s novel is “her first.”

If the author is indeed a woman, her achievement is all the more remarkable; diarist and primary characters all seem to be male.
