MEXICO CITY — The United States offered a $50,000 reward today for information on the whereabouts of a kidnaped Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was snatched by presumed drug traffickers.
“If the kidnapers hope by these actions to deter the cooperative effort of the United States and Mexico to rid our citizens of the plague of drug trafficking, they are mistaken,” said U.S. Ambassador John Gavin.
“Neither this mission nor our governments will be intimidated by Mafia thugs,” he said.
A U.S. Embassy spokeswoman said Enrique Camarena Salazar, 37, a naturalized American citizen, was kidnaped Thursday afternoon in Guadalajara by four armed men who pulled up beside Camarena, forced him into the back of a car and sped off.
The kidnapers have not made contact with U.S. or Mexican government officials and no ransom demands have been received.
