A Department of Defense team spent the weekend at Moffett Field near Mountain View trying to find some new recruits--Uncle Sam is hunting for a few good dogs. Officials say they need canines to guard bases and sniff out bombs and drugs. Air Force Master Sgt. R. L. Leslie said the acceptance standards for military dogs are more rigorous than for humans. “We’re lucky if we accept 15 out of 200 dogs in a weekend, and then five of the ones we take won’t complete their training,” Leslie said. The recruiters, he said, have a special eye out for healthy German shepherds or mixed shepherds, 1 to 3 years old, “with the potential to be aggressive.” Owners get about $400 if their dog is recruited.
