Martina Navratilova struggled past 21-year-old Catarina Lindqvist, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, Sunday night in the fourth round of the $1.8 million Lipton International Players Championships at Delray Beach, Fla.
The hard-earned victory put the top-seeded Navratilova in the quarterfinals along with No. 2 seeded, Chris Evert Lloyd, who turned back ninth-seeded Kathy Jordan, 6-4, 6-4.
There were two upsets in the men’s ranks, hard-hitting Mike Leach beating No. 10 Jimmy Arias, 7-6, 6-3, and fifth-seeded Aaron Krickstein falling to Greg Holmes, 7-6, 7-6.
On the women’s side, Kathy Rinaldi eliminated No. 8 Zina Garrison, 7-5, 6-1, and West Germany’s Bettina Bunge ousted No. 14 Pam Casale, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
Second-seeded Mats Wilander got past unseeded Bob Green when Green double-faulted while serving for the match, and Wilander reeled off the final five games to escape, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Green, who reached the fourth round in the U.S. Open last year before falling to eventual champion John McEnroe, jumped into a 4-1 lead against Wilander in the final set and serving at 4-2 when his service deserted him.
He double-faulted at 15-0 and again at 30-15. His third double-fault came on break point, pulling Wilander to 3-4. Then Wilander ran the table on Green.
It took Lloyd more than 1 1/2 hours to topple Jordan, who upset Lloyd in the third round at Wimbledon in 1983--the only time in her career Lloyd has not reached at least the semifinals in a Grand Slam tournament--and defeated her in their last meeting.
In the second set, Jordan began by breaking Lloyd, then holding her own service to go up, 2-0. It was 3-1 when Lloyd began her winning run, taking five of the last six games.
Also moving into the women’s quarterfinals, No. 12 Barbara Potter defeated Switzerland’s Lilian Drescher, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, No. 7 Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia defeated 13-year-old Mary Joe Fernandez, 6-3, 6-0, and No. 10 Carling Bassett of Canada downed 14-year-old Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina 6-0, 6-4.
Reaching the fourth round in the men’s singles, No. 12 Vitas Gerulaitis stopped Matt Mitchell 6-4, 6-4, Australia’s Brod Dyke defeated Tim Wilkison 7-5, 7-5, and Tim Mayotte downed Marty Davis, 6-4, 6-4.
Dan Goldie of Stanford beat top-seeded Mikael Pernfors of Georgia, 6-3, 6-2, in the men’s final of the National Indoor Collegiate Championships at Houston.
