Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 28-year-old man who was shot, beaten and drowned in a stream bed in Topanga Canyon last week, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
The spokesman declined to say how sheriff’s investigators linked the suspects--Kevin Leigh, 21, of Canoga Park, and Mark Smith, 28, of West Hollywood--to the murder. Both men were arrested Saturday. Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the killing, he said.
The body of the victim, a West Hollywood resident whose name has not been released pending notification of his family, was found Feb. 4 by hikers about 50 feet below Topanga Canyon Boulevard. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office determined that he died from drowning.
Both suspects were being held without bail at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station. Officials said they have been unable to reach the victim’s relatives, who live in Texas.
