Genentech Inc., a major bioengineering firm, on Thursday named G. Kirk Raab president and chief operating officer. The latter is a new position.
Raab, 49, has a wide background with pharmaceutical companies, most recently at Abbott Laboratories, where he was president and chief operating officer. The move signals the company’s shift from pure bioengineering research to marketing and manufacturing of products derived from so-called recombinant DNA technology.
As president, Raab succeeds Robert A. Swanson, 37, who remains chief executive. Thomas J. Perkins, 53, continues as chairman.
“We welcome the addition of Kirk Raab to our management team,” Swanson said in a prepared statement. “As the products of Genentech’s pioneering research near market, the company is completing its transition into a major pharmaceutical company.”
The South San Francisco-based company also appointed the following vice presidents: Brian C. Cunningham, general counsel; William W. Higgins, human resources, and Mark B. Hirsch, business development.
LOS ANGELES COUNTY
Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. has named Ellen Bleeker vice president-human resources in the market services division. The retailer is based in Los Angeles.
Theodore B. Emmons has been named vice president at the Real Estate Industries Group of Los Angeles-based Golden State Sanwa Bank, Pasadena.
Jeffery Goeckner has been named senior vice president and general manager of Environetics International Inc., Los Angeles.
