The Los Angeles Unified School District board has announced the appointment of Andrew Cazares, 48, as superintendent of Region B, serving schools in South Gate, Huntington Park, Bell, Cudahy, Maywood, Vernon and an area in Watts west of Alameda Street.
Cazares, a 19-year veteran with the district, on Tuesday replaced Gabriel Cortina, who has taken a position as assistant superintendent for adult and occupational education.
Cazares, who began his career with the Los Angeles school system as an elementary teacher, served most recently as coordinator of the district’s task force for implementation of Senate Bill 813, the state education reform act.
He has held numerous administrative positions in the district, including posts as lobbyist in Sacramento, adviser in the student integration resource office, field coordinator for San Fernando Valley schools, and principal of several elementary schools. He also worked as Title I coordinator in Region B for six months in 1981.
Cazares is bilingual and has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education from UCLA.
