Afghan rebels have repulsed three Soviet attempts to free government soldiers under siege in three garrisons near the Pakistani border, Western diplomats said in New Delhi. Last week, the Soviet-installed government in Kabul said its soldiers were under siege at Barikot, Bangash and Chamkani, near Pakistan. A government broadcast accused the Pakistanis of providing military assistance to the insurgents. The diplomats reported that the Soviets are airdropping supplies to the beleaguered soldiers.
