NEW YORK — A fire set by an arsonist early Wednesday killed four persons trapped inside a Latino social club and critically burned a fifth. Five other persons were injured while fighting the blaze.
Authorities said the arsonist threw a “large quantity of accelerant” onto the staircase leading to the club, then lit the fire. Deputy Fire Commissioner John Mulligan said the trapped victims had no chance to escape the intense heat and flames because of bars on the windows and locked security doors.
