A 64-year-old man driving a rented tractor-trailer rig loaded with lumber died Friday when his truck went off the side of the Santa Ana Freeway in Santa Fe Springs and smashed into a building.
The victim, whose name was withheld, died when the tractor crashed through the six-inch concrete wall of the building, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to investigators, the tractor was traveling about 55 m.p.h., pulling two trailers loaded with 50,000 pounds of lumber.
For an unknown reason, the driver lost control and veered to the right, through the chain-link fence along the side of the freeway north of Alondra Boulevard, the CHP said. The truck almost sailed across Freeway Drive below the freeway, jumped a curb and penetrated the building owned by Suzuki of California Inc.
No other injuries were reported.
The CHP said the truck was rented from a firm in Montebello.
