Justice William H. Rehnquist said in a rare interview that when he came to the U.S. Supreme Court 13 years ago he felt duty bound to “lean the other way” and brake the liberal activism of the Earl Warren court. Rehnquist told the New York Times Magazine, “I just wanted a chance to put my 2 cents in.” The 60-year-old justice, nominated to the high court by President Richard M. Nixon and sworn in Jan. 7, 1972, has a reputation of being staunchly conservative.
