Prep Baseball : Stanton Hits Two Home Runs to Lead Tustin Past Foothill

David Stanton’s three-run home run in the fourth inning propelled Tustin High School to a 11-5 win over Foothill and the Tustin Tournament championship Monday at Tustin.
Tustin trailed 2-1 in the fourth inning before it exploded for six runs. The Tillers led off with two singles, then Stanton hit his home run. Two doubles and a single accounted for the remaining three runs, giving the Tillers a 7-2 lead.
Stanton was 4 for 4, with two homers and four RBIs. Dean Roberts was 2 for 4 and Steve Surico and Mike Moorhead were both 2 for 3.
Foothill’s John McTaggart had a two-run home run in the fourth.
Surico (2-0) was the winning pitcher and John Rice (1-1) took the loss. Tustin is 3-0, while Foothill is 2-1.
In other Tustin Tournament action:
Capistrano Valley 15, El Modena 8--The Cougars scored six runs in the fourth inning for the win in the third-place game at Foothill High.
El Modena, trailing 9-8, had the bases loaded with two outs in the fourth inning. The Cougars brought in pitcher Dan Blancett to strike out the final batter. Blancett, who pitched the final 2 innings, was credited with a save.
Ricky Jones went 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs for the Cougars. Marcel Durand was 2 for 4 and Fred Yslas was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a double for Capistrano Valley.
Brett August (1-0) got the win, Brett Johnson took the loss. Capistrano Valley is 2-1 and El Modena is 1-2.
In Loara Tournament action:
Esperanza 7, John W. North 2--The Aztecs (3-0) got the win at home in third-round action. North (2-1) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a home run off pitcher Greg Haskell. However, Esperanza scored six runs in the sixth inning. Tom Redington went 2 for 2 with one RBI and scored two runs for the Aztecs. David Salcido (2-0) got the win.
In Glendora Tournament action:
Sonora 5, Azusa 1--The Raiders won in second-round play at Goddard Junior High School. Sonora scored three runs in the third inning off two base hits and two errors. Mike McClaron (1-0) got the win. The Raiders are 3-1, while the Aztecs are 1-1.
