The California Highway Patrol announced it will increase its patrols in four areas of Southern California “to target violations by truckers” in an effort to reduce truck-involved accidents. “It’s serious enough to the point where we’re going to devote extra manpower,” CHP Officer Jon West said, noting that truck accidents in the Southern Division, which includes Los Angeles County, increased by 15% from 1983 to 1984. The four designated areas are Glendale, Santa Fe Springs, East Los Angeles and downtown Los Angeles. West said CHP statistics show that 51% of truck-involved accidents are caused by truck drivers.
