Doctors and nurses caring for AIDS patients “are at minimum risk of infection” from the virus that causes the deadly disease, a epidemiologist who participated in a National Institutes of Health study reported. Dr. Cecil Henderson said the study reinforces the belief that the disease can be spread only through sexual or other intimate contact involving bodily fluids such as blood. In a Washington interview, he said the study makes it “hard to believe that the disease could be spread in a casual social situation or by simply sitting next to someone on a bus.”
