AMRITSAR, India — Hindu mobs attacked Sikhs and set fire to their shops today in the first major religious violence to rock northern India since the murder of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi last October.
Officials in Punjab state said a 24-hour curfew was imposed on the village of Dhariwal, about 250 miles north of New Delhi and 40 miles northeast of Amritsar, to end the strife. The violence was sparked by the slayings Monday of two Hindus by suspected Sikh extremists.
