Suspect Wounded in Drug Raid on Home

A North Hollywood man was shot and wounded in the arm Wednesday after he fired a shot at a plainclothes narcotics detective during a drug raid at his home, Los Angeles police said.

Detective Daniel W. Lott Jr., 44, fired six rounds, striking Carl J. Monson once in the forearm during an 11:15 a.m. raid at Monson’s home, according to Lt. Charles Higbie, head of the police officer-involved shooting team.

The shooting occurred after about half a dozen plainclothes officers from the Administrative Narcotics Division served a search warrant at Monson’s house at 4944 Willow Crest Ave., Higbie said.

According to Higbie, police forced their way into the house with a hand-held battering ram after occupants of the house refused requests to open the door.

Monson allegedly fired one round from a handgun at Lott after the detective confronted him in a bedroom. The shot missed the detective, Higbie said.

Monson was taken to North Hollywood Medical Center and then transferred to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center jail ward, where he was being held on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer. Monson was in satisfactory condition, Higbie said.

Monson’s wife, Tricia, and another woman, Stephanie Willmas, were being held in Van Nuys Jail on the same charge.
