A portable anti-tank rocket launcher was confiscated Tuesday by the San Diego Fire Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in the 4400 block of Mayberry Street. Police officers who noticed the launcher while answering another call.
Gayle Bates, a hazardous device technician for the EOD, said the device was a launch tube for a 66-millimeter light anti-tank weapon. No rocket for the weapons was found. Bates said the launcher was found lying in a fenced-in patio area behind one of the apartments.
Bates said the launcher was “probably a souvenir.” He added that merely possessing the weapon is not illegal, but because it is believed to be stolen from the military, it was confiscated and will be turned over to the Army.
