The last sentence in Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates’ letter (May 4), “Chief Gates Defends Civil Service System,” reads: “We humble civil servants, believe it or not, are committed to excellence.”
I believe Gates’ commitment, but if he is humble, apple pie is hemlock!
