American will fight Pan Am’s Pacific route sale.

American Airlines challenged the $750-million sale of Pan Am’s Pacific operations to United Airlines. American’s opposition is based on its belief that the sale will give United an unfair competitive advantage, a spokesman said. The company is expected to file a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation within a month. At the same time, a Pan Am spokesman in New York said that American’s objections are “without merit.”
