VICTORIA, Canada — Mark Sutton has laid claim to a place in the Guinness Book of World Records--by living atop a pole for the last 441 days.
“I haven’t set a day when I’ll return to earth, but it will definitely be before the end of the year,” he told reporters Tuesday in this British Columbia city. “Sometimes I think I’m going squirrely.”
The 25-year-old Sutton, who moved to Canada from Peterborough, England, in 1972, has spent the last 441 days in a makeshift blue house perched on the top of a telephone pole. The previous record of 440 days was held by a Florida man.
Sutton passes the time by reading the Bible. “I find it interesting. I hope to read it through,” he said at an impromptu news conference given from his perch.
