A judge dismissed a $100-million punitive damage claim against R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., reducing to $1 million the amount that can be awarded to a dead smoker’s relatives if they prevail. The ruling in Santa Barbara Superior Court was a victory for the company, principal defendant in the case. Judge Bruce William Dodds granted a motion dismissing the $100-million damage claim filed by survivors of John Mark Galbraith, 69, of Goleta.
