Tennis Roundup : Swede vs. Swede Finally Ends Their String of Wins at Rome
- Share via
Stefan Simonsson became the first Swedish player to lose a match after three days of the Italian Open tennis championships at Rome.
And it took a fellow Swede to beat him.
When No. 5-seeded Henrik Sundstrom defeated Simonsson, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, Wednesday, it ended a streak of eight consecutive victories by six Swedish players.
Five countrymen remain, from top-seeded Mats Wilander to teen-age qualifier Kent Carlsson.
Wilander won his second-round match when Pavel Slozil of Czechoslovakia became dizzy and retired with Wilander ahead, 4-1.
Carlsson defeated another Czech, Libor Pimek, 6-3, 6-2.
Other Swedes who advanced were No. 3-seeded Anders Jarryd and Jan Gunnarsson. Jarryd eliminated Mike Leach, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, and Gunnarsson stopped Argentina’s Alejandro Ganzabal, 6-4, 7-5.
Top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd brushed aside Helen Kelesi of Canada, 6-1, 6-2, in 59 minutes to move into the third round of the $150,000 West German Women’s Open at West Berlin.
At Melbourne, Australia, Pam Shriver and Kathy Jordan struggled into the quarterfinals of a $110,000 women’s indoor tournament.
Shriver survived a major scare before defeating Terry Holladay, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, and Jordan turned back Robyn White, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
