Body of Man, 22, Discovered in Water Near Pier

The body of a 22-year-old boat cleaner was discovered Thursday morning floating near a pier at Ardell Yacht and Ship Brokers in Newport Beach, the victim of what police said appears to be an accidental drowning.

The body of Stephen Benito Alfirvic of Huntington Beach was discovered at about 9 a.m. in water 20 feet deep near the brokerage firm at 2101 W. Coast Highway, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Todd Wilkinson.

Alfirvic’s family reported him missing late Wednesday when he failed to return from a cleaning job on a boat anchored at the firm’s pier, Wilkinson said. His truck, shoes and some cleaning equipment were found near where his body was discovered, police said.

There was no indication of foul play, Wilkinson said. An autopsy was to be performed.
