People for the American Way called for the resignation of Thomas G. Tancredo, a top Education Department official, charging in a letter to Education Secretary William J. Bennett that Tancredo used his job to promote religious goals while attacking public schools. Tancredo, who serves as head of the department’s regional office in Denver, has been criticized in the past for distributing a tract calling for the establishment of the United States as a “Christian nation” and urging the development of “a truly Christian educational system for our young people.”
