Gas Emissions, Quakes Reported at St. Helens

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Scientists detected increased gas emissions and several small earthquakes under Mt. St. Helens Friday, the eve of the fifth anniversary of the volcano’s cataclysmic May 18, 1980, eruption.
Volcano watchers for the U.S. Geological Survey said they began detecting a slight increase in activity about a week ago. But they avoided making any prediction about a future eruption.
