SEOUL, South Korea — Premier Lho Shin Yong on Friday discouraged dissidents from pressing their demands for political reforms and warned that government authorities would continue to deal harshly with those who challenge them.
Lho’s statements came a day after 15,000 students staged anti-government rallies and attempted demonstrations at 39 campuses in Seoul and provincial areas.
The protests marked the fifth anniversary of an anti-government uprising in the provincial city of Kwangju in May, 1980, in which at least 180 people were killed.
