South Korean riot police fired tear gas to disperse several hundred students marching on a cemetery in Kwangju to mark the fifth anniversary of that city’s bloody, anti-government uprising. About 100 youths were arrested but no serious injuries were reported. The clash came following a rally at Chonnam University commemorating the anniversary of the May, 1980, anti-government uprising in which more than 180 people were killed by army troops. In Seoul, the Council for the Promotion of Democracy, a group led by top dissidents Kim Dae Jung and Kim Young Sam, held a memorial service to mark the occasion.
