OCC Men’s Crew Captures a Title at Pacific Coast Rowing Championships

The Orange Coast College men’s crew team finished with 19 points Sunday to win the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Assn. title for non-Pacific 10 Conference schools at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma near Sacramento.

OCC upset California in the novice eight, though the Pirates were seeded fifth. They caught the Bears at 1,100 meters of the 2,000-meter race. UC Irvine’s crew finished fifth.

OCC also won the varsity four, leading the entire race.

The Pirates finished second in the junior varsity eight, losing to Washington but edging Cal at the wire. In the frosh eight, OCC finished fourth behind Washington, Cal and Stanford, while UCI finished sixth.

The OCC crew has been invited to race in the People’s Republic of China, so it will forgo the men’s national championship June 15-16 in Cincinnati.

Washington won three of eight varsity finals to claim the Pacific 10 championship.
