Mt. St. Helens Eruption Feared

United Press International

The frequency of earthquakes beneath Mt. St. Helens increased today, giving scientists further evidence that the volcano is about to begin a possibly explosive eruption.

“Earthquakes are continuing at a slightly higher rate than 24 hours ago,” U.S. Geological Survey spokesman Steven Brantley said. The agency issued an advisory Monday night warning of a new eruption “within the next two weeks, possibly within the next few days” on the peak, which blew its top in a massive 1980 eruption that left 57 people dead or missing.
