Coal Trucks in Defiance of Walkout Fired Upon

LOBATA, W. Va. — At least one sniper opened fire Monday on a convoy of three trucks delivering coal in defiance of a strike at a processing plant, and one driver was wounded, police said.
An angry official blamed the striking United Mine Workers for the attack at the Sprouse Creek Processing Co. plant and vowed to continue the coal runs “because we refuse to be the slaves of the union.” No arrests were made.
