A Gardena obstetrician agreed to relinquish his California license to practice medicine in return for dismissal of manslaughter charges arising from the death of a child he delivered. Dr. Ching-Tsai Chen, who now practices in Georgia, was accused of gross negligence in the death of an infant born in 1982 to Guadalupe de Alba at the now-closed California Gardena Hospital. Prosecutors said the child died because Chen failed to diagnose a serious medical condition that could starve the baby of oxygen during the birth process. Chen, who faced a four-year prison term if convicted, made no admission of wrongdoing in surrendering his California license.
