Two of the biggest air quality problems in California will be studied in projects approved and funded by the state Air Resources Board, said Gordon Duffy, the board’s chairman. Caltech will receive more than $1 million, including some funds from the Environmental Protection Agency, to study various aspects of acid rain. With the funds, Caltech will set up monitoring stations in eight cities----Long Beach, Anaheim, Upland, San Nicholas Island, Burbank, Riverside, Lennox and Los Angeles. The Resources Board also awarded $99,798 to Radian Corp. of Sacramento to study the possibility of developing a system similar to Smog Check to monitor emmissions from heavy-duty trucks and buses.
