Japan Has a Bone to Pick With Company

TOKYO — The goverment has ordered a leading artificial bone maker to recall uncertified bones supplied to Japanese hospitals but most have already been implanted in patients, a company spokesman said Tuesday.
The Health and Welfare Ministry issued the unusual order to the Kyoto-based Kyocera company, a leading ceramics manufacturer, for failure to wait for official approval to market the artificial bones, a Kyocera spokesman said.
Kyodo news service said the ministry estimated that Kyocera last year sold a total of 1,063 bones--worth $1.4 million--to more than 200 hospitals and clinics throughout Japan.
