San Diego Section Tennis : Eight Seeds Advance to Second Round

SAN DIEGO — There were very few surprises in the opening round of the San Diego Section individual tennis championships Tuesday at Bishop’s School. The top eight seeds in the singles competition won and will advance to today’s second round.
Top-seeded Greg Failla of Ramona High School defeated Valhalla’s Mike Askbig, 6-3, 6-3. Second-seeded Paul Carbone of Bonita Vista defeated Mission Bay’s Josh Grimes by default. And No. 3 Carl Chang of San Dieguito defeated Valhalla’s Kevin Klabunde, 6-5, 6-7, 6-2, in one of the day’s closer matches.
No. 4 Craig Ellison of Torrey Pines defeated Dan Levine, 6-2, 6-4. No. 5 Woody Yocum of Monte Vista defeated La Jolla’s Peter Charlton, 6-4, 6-4. No. 6 Dale Minney of Patrick Henry defeated San Pasqual’s David Rosencranz, 6-1, 6-1. No. 7 Jaime Tacata of Parker beat Christian’s Vince Riveroll, 6-0, 6-1. And No. 8 Craig Whittaker of El Camino won by default.
