George C. Wallace, the Alabama governor, testified in federal court in Birmingham that he fought for segregation when he made his “stand in the schoolhouse door” in 1963 but now supports “freedom of choice” on the state’s campuses. “I am not for segregation now, and I haven’t been for a long, long time.” Wallace, now in his fourth term as governor, testified during the second day of trial of a Justice Department suit that claims that the state still has vestiges of racial segregation in its higher education system.
