Brandon Richards Sets National Vault Record

Brandon Richards of San Marcos High in Santa Barbara pole-vaulted 18 feet 2 inches Thursday night in an all-comers meet at Eugene, Ore., to set a national high school record.
Richards, who is the son of two-time Olympic pole vault champion Bob Richards, broke the old mark of 18-1 set by Joe Dial of Marlow, Okla., in 1981. Dial is the current American record-holder at 19-2.
