A General Electric spokesman attributed the layoffs to a decline in demand for electronic products. The staff cuts, which will take effect in the next two weeks, will bring to 2,700 the total number of GE workers laid off in Singapore over the past five months. The company will still have 7,000 workers in its eight Singapore branches, but the spokesman declined to comment on further layoffs.
