St. Augustine College Alumni to Honor Tuskegee Airmen

St. Augustine’s College National Alumni Assn. will hold its Gala Dinner today at 7:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Wilshire Hotel, 3515 Wilshire Blvd.
Dr. Prezell R. Robinson, college president, will speak, and members of the Los Angeles chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen will be honored for their contributions during World War II.
St. Augustine’s College, founded Feb. 4, 1867, by the Freedman’s Commission of the Protestant Episcopal Church and the federal Freedman’s Bureau, was the first such institution in North Carolina for the education of newly freed slaves. Located near the state capital, Raleigh, St. Augustine’s is a predominantly black, coeducational liberal arts college.
The Tuskegee Airmen were 966 black military aviators trained near Tuskegee, Ala., and at Tuskegee Institute under the rigid racial segregation rules of World War II. They fought in the aerial war over North Africa, Sicily and Europe and won 150 medals.
