Park to Reopen: Liberty Park, which was the focus of a battle over development plans in 1983, will reopen Saturday after a $366,500 renovation. New features of the six-acre park include a children’s playground, basketball and handball courts, new lights, picnic areas, and rebuilt paths and sidewalks. Poor soil conditions that have stymied landscaping efforts in the past have been overcome with the help of 473 truckloads of soil, Charlene Lent, a spokeswoman for the Community Services Department, said. The reopening will begin at 11 a.m. with the dedication of a grove of trees to be named after Lucille Wolfe, one of the city’s original Parks and Recreation commissioners, who recently died.
